Where can I learn about using assignments?
Assignments
Understand it.
Many courses will require the use of the Assignments tool several times during the semester for submitting assignments.
- You will use the Assignments tool to send files or assignments to your mentor, teaching assistant, or instructor; it is your electronic mailbox.
- You will also use this tool to retrieve assignments after they have been graded.

Note: Some course sites may have an Assignments area in the left navigation. Do not confuse the Assignments area with the Assignments tool. The tool will always be attached to a specific assignment and identified with an icon and text link, as you will see later in this tutorial.
Use it.
To use the Assignments tool, follow these (1-7) steps:
Step 1. Click the area where your instructor has placed course assignments.
- In the left navigation of your course site, areas containing assignments may be labeled Course Documents, Assignments, or something similar.
- Your instructor or mentor will provide you with a description of what is contained within the different areas listed in the left navigation of the course site.

Step 1 continued. Click the area where your instructor has placed course assignments.

Step 2. Click the link to the assignment you wish to complete.
After you drill down to the page containing the week's or unit's assignments, a web page similar to the one below will appear.
- Course assignments to be completed using the Assignments tool are identified by an icon of a clipboard with a check mark.
- The word "Assignments" will not necessarily appear in the link or description.

Step 2 continued. Click the link to the assignment you wish to complete.
Here's another example of an assignment to be completed via the Assignments tool.
- Important information about completing and submitting the assignment may be published here, or it may be published or repeated on the Assignments tool page.
- You will begin using the Assignments tool functions after clicking >>View/Complete.
Step 3. View information about the assignment.
After you click the View/Complete link, a web page similar to the one below will appear.
- Under Assignment Information, you will find the Name of the assignment and Instructions for completing the assignment.
- Instructions may include the due date and the file types (e.g., Word, PDF, RTF) you may use to submit your assignment.

Step 3 continued. View information about the assignment.
Some instructors may include a section labeled Assignment Files.
- Assignment Files will likely include links to additional material for completing the assignment.
- In the example below, Assignment Files include "Detailed instructions" for completing the assignment and "Sample Document format." Click all links here for this important information.
- To view these documents, click the text link. To download them, right-click (or control-click on a Mac).
Step 4. Browse your directory for the file or files you wish to submit or save.
- You can attach one or more files using the Assignments tool.
- Once you've attached a file or files, you can either submit them immediately or save them to be sent at another time.
1. Scroll down to view Your Files.
2. Click Browse.

Use it well.
Good practices for using the Assignments tool.
- Submit all files required for an assignment at one time.
Sending files at different times can confuse your instructor or mentor.
- Add meaningful comments to the comment area.
If you wouldn't say it to your instructor's face, don't say it here. Excuses about why an assignment is late or incomplete may be easier to "say" online, but that doesn't make them any less insulting or irresponsible if they are not valid.
- Your instructor will contact you after receiving your assignment or will set up procedures for follow-ups.
Send inquiries about whether your assignment was received only after the stated time has passed for receiving notice that your assignment was received, graded, etc.
